![]() ![]() Through the medium of the Arthurian story he found his own voice, his unique contribution to keeping alive the flame of civilisation. ![]() White was writing in wartime England, a country increasingly absorbed by a need to find an antidote to war. White's story of Arthur begins with his `enfances', set in an imaginary medieval England, but it is far removed from the conventional historical novel. White's `footnote to Malory' (his own phrase) resulted in the last major retelling of the story based on Malory's Morte Darthur, and Elisabeth Brewer explores the literary context of White's finest work as wellas considering his aims and achievement in writing it. Is it for children, or for adults? Is it fantasy or a psychological novel? In its great range, it encompasses poetry and farce, comedy and tragedy -and sudden flights of schoolboy humour. The Once and Future King defies classification. ![]()

![]() ![]() This book was published in 1949 and some of the events described are at odds with later archeological findings and interpretations of the history of the period, but it seems very faithful in spirit to the story of Akhnaton. A tragic sequence of events is set in motion. This he does and from then on it seems that there is no going back. Soon Pharaoh Akhnaton determines to abandon the city which he sees as irredeemably evil and to build his own city of Akhetaton in a new place. On returning to his city of Thebes, Sinuhe finds the city much changed and a restless spirit among the people. ![]() He also gathers information for his friend, Horemheb, a commander of Egyptian forces who is preparing them for war even as the pacifist pharaoh decrees peace. During his travels, he treats the sick and learns form other physicians and his renown grows. ![]() It is presented as the "autobiography" of the mysterious Sinuhe, a man of uncertain origins who rose from poverty to be the physician to the king.īefore he attained that high position, he traveled throughout the Mediterranean area, to Syria, Mitanni, Babylonia, and Crete. It was a turbulent time when blood often flowed in the streets, a time that was rich in drama on many levels. I have long had an interest in the history of ancient Egypt, particularly the Amarna period when the heretic pharaoh Akhnaton attempted to overthrow the ancient gods of the land and replace them with the One God, Aton. ![]() ![]() I was also surprised at how much of their journey they've been able to keep from the rest of their MC family. ![]() He's a fixer by nature, but the lessons he learned while supporting Rachel really helped him to be both a better person and better president for the MC. He is definitely her complement and it was wonderful to see how he tried his best to help her succeed. All we'd really known before was his persona as the MC President, but the man has TONS of depth and sensitivity that I was just not expecting. I went into this knowing it was going to be a doozy, because crusty b!tches like Rachel always have "reasons" for their crustiness, but needless to say, I still wasn't fully prepared for her story. I feel like I've run a marathon of emotions and will continue to be a wrung out mess while I wait for the answers to MULTIPLE cliffhangers □□. ![]() Rex and Rachel's story is far more grand, more epic, than I could have ever possibly imagined and am completely blown away. What a fan-fucking-tastic read! Rex is the book I've been waiting for since Nyx and it did □□ NOT □□ disappoint□□. ![]() ![]() It does contain many compelling scenes, particularly the climax. I learned a lot about a topic that has always intrigued and confused me. Trinity was first published in 1976 and is recognized as a classic of historical fiction. The book also gives us capsule introductions to the women in his life because, of course, the great man attracts great loves. Perhaps even more depressingly, he recognizes his fight isn’t winnable but he is driven to fight nonetheless. More than formidable, the obstacles are insurmountable. It also follows the lives of his various nemeses, showing just how formidable they are so we know what Conor is up against. The book follows his lengthy path to martyrdom. Conor springs from a long line of doomed Catholic rebels. Trinity is primarily the story of Conor Larkin, a heroic protagonist who did not seem so much a man as the embodiment of the Catholic cause. ![]() ![]() It’s a very readable way to learn the material and it is a novel, after all, so the bias can be overlooked in favor of the story. ![]() He covers an immense amount of historical, political, and cultural material to produce an informative if one-sided account. Uris allows for no shades of gray in his portrayal of the greedy British aristocracy, manipulating the working poor Irish Protestants against the Catholics. It explains the condition of the dirt poor Catholic peasantry and how they were kept in dire poverty by a corrupt political system abetted by religious bigotry. Trinity is the story of the Irish Catholic struggle against English Protestant oppression in the years before WWI. ![]() ![]() ![]() As the deadly game plays out, Pip realises that everything in Little Kilton is finally coming full circle.
